The fourth Migrant worker film festival in 2009 will be held in Seoul and local cities.
Under the subtitle of ‘I like JJambbong’, this year’s festival will have its opening exhibitions from July 17 to July 19 at the IDIESPACE Treatre in Seoul, move beginning July 26 to Jinju, Maseok, Cheonan, Bucheon, Ansan, Iksan and go to Kimpo as its final destination to hold its closing ceremony on September 13.
A total of 22 short and long movies from South Korea and other countries will be on show under the four sessions of Songs of Butterfly, Shadow Man, Children painting New World, and Migrant Gaze. Sleep Dealer, an opening movie deals with the real picture of migrant workers in the future society that might take place in the not-distant future.
Its story goes around focusing on a Mexican young man from a rural area, who moved to a big city and found a job at a sophisticated factory where he operates robots in other big cities by remote control.
Sohee Jung, the program technical team leader explained why it was chosen as an opening work, saying “As shown in the movie, the vast majority of victims of flourishing neo-liberalism are migrants from the Third World. Sleep Dealer is a great movie which sends a wake-up call message to this present situation and reflects the incoming future.”
In addition, four movies will be screened produced by migrant workers and migrants themselves in the session of ‘Migrant Gaze’, providing movie-goers with an opportunity to sympathize with their life from a closer distance.
As additional events along with movie shows, culture performances like ‘mixrice’ cartoon exhibition and the concert of Vietnamese traditional musical instruments and multicultural traditional food festival will be held.
The price of admission at the Seoul festival is 3,000 won a movie and a package ticket for five movies is sold at 10,000 won. On-line advance purchase is available at www.maxmovie.com.
