- The 13th SICAF 2009 

 

 “We have a 100-year history of cartoon and a 50-year history of animation. Today’s animation industry seems to go through the transition from sub-contractor system arts to creation system ones and at the same time, our animation is gaining the reputation at the European and other foreign markets.” 

 

SBA_KY_Lee.jpg Kwangyeol Lee, Animation Team Director of SBA said like that at one of the largest Asian Cartoon and Animation Events, Seoul International Cartoon Animation Festival held from July 22 to 26 for 5 days at Coex, Seoul and at Lotte Cinema near Konkuk University. At the 13th SICAF 2009, anyone who participates in the festival can enjoy cultural contents, cartoon and animation.

 

best_baseball_280.jpg The exhibition concept of SICAF 2009 is <the 100-year journey of Korean Cartoon with Time Capsule> was prepared in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Korean Cartoon. At the exhibition event, the best scenes were mainly focused on. Also a variety of visual events such as ‘Spider man’, ‘X man’, ‘Iron man’ were prepared.

 

 Rastko CIRIC from Serbia said at the exhibition hall, “I like many different points of views and style animation and cartoon in the exhibition. Some arts remind me of my students’ ones. I enjoy things very much.”

 

Rastko_280.jpg Mr. Rastko who came to South Korea for the first time started drawing a picture at the age when he was able to hold a pencil. His mother and father are both artists so that they had a great effect on his drawing while drawing is a real hard work. It is the happiest moment for him to draw. Otherwise, he doesn’t do it. Also at the end of the day, he found satisfaction when readers enjoyed his cartoon.  

 

At the exhibition event, ‘the International Digital Cartoon Exhibition’ is held with an award ceremony. 2,765 cartoons and animations from 43 nations have gone through the public subscription completion, and among them, 19 will be presented and awarded.

 

In particular, from this year, this exhibition festival is held with the business market of Seoul character · License fair.

 

Brazilian_280.jpg A Brazilian publisher from Brazil said he came here to find a nice cartoon and to make a license contract. He has published Italian, American, Korean cartoon books including ‘pure love’ cartoon series in his motherland.

 

Last year visitors were about 80,000, and this year SICAF visitors are expected to double that of 2008.  

 

 Jinyoung Jang, a cartoon professor with Sangmyung university said, “Korean cartoon and animation is getting more diversified. And exhibition arts are developing with colorful styles and the role of cartoon is widening in line with the digital environments.”

 

He added that the cartoon concepts have largely changed in a positive way, but still the general public has less read. To promote the cartoon and animation industry, comic books should sell a lot in local markets as well as overseas markets.
